GUWAHATI, May 27 The Cotton College celebrated its 115th foundation day at the Kalaguru Bishnu Prasad Rabha (KBR) Hall at the college campus today.
Distinguished academician Prof Samir Kumar Das, who is a professor of Political Science and the Dean, Faculty of Arts, Calcutta University, delivered the foundation day lecture on Pursuit of Excellence in Higher Education.
In his lecture, Prof Das tried to develop a critique of the way excellence is envisaged, sought to be pursued and cultivated in the field of higher learning. He also stressed that while colonialism had come to an end, the wall that divides the countrys higher education institutions from the society at large refuses to go.
While elitism is encouraged in institutions of higher education, one finds it difficult to bring the knowledge claims of the unusual repositories of knowledge to bear on our higher education establishment, he said.
Dr Dhrubajyoti Saikia, Vice Chancellor, Cotton College State University, attended the function as the chief guest.
The event started off with the opening address by the principal of the Cotton College, Dr Nirada Devi. A souvenir was also released on the occasion.
The foundation day programme concluded with the felicitation of students of Cotton College for their stellar performance in the Higher Secondary examination, 2014. Student achievers in the fields of karate, kung-fu, drill, etc., were also felicitated on the occasion.
