Former Silchar MP Nurul Huda passes away

SILCHAR, Dec 17 - One of the frontline Communist leaders of the yesteryears in Assam, former MP of Silchar Nurul Huda passed away on Thursday afternoon at a hospital in Kolkata. He was 85.

He is survived by his wife Chhobi Huda.

Huda had cardiac problems.

Born in Dolugram under Lakhipur sub-division in the then undivided Cachar district in 1930, Huda�s father, Mohd Ali was an Executive Magistrate. Huda did his matriculation from the Government Boys� HS School of Silchar in 1946 and then went to St Xavier�s in Kolkata for higher studies. He did his degree in Mechanical Engineering from Jadavpur Engineering College. He made his entry into politics joining the All India Students� Federation in 1948 and joined the Communist Party of India in the same year.

Briefing media-persons on the illustrious political career of Huda, a CPI(M) leader said at the party office that after the death of Congress Parliamentarian Jyotsna Chanda, Nurul Huda defeated INC candidate and former minister Mohitosh Purakystha to be elected as MP from Silchar in 1974. During the Emergency period in 1975, Huda was sent to jail under the MISA rule for 19 months. In 1978 Huda was again elected as MLA from Silchar constituency. Huda shifted to New Delhi in 2005 to work with the All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) and served as the Assam State vice president of AIKS for some time. In 2013, he returned to Kolkata.

It was informed that dead body of the former MP will be kept at the Peace Heaven in Kolkata for party leaders and cadres to pay their last respect. He will be buried at the Gobordanga burial ground on Friday. A silent rally will be taken out by the CPI(M) cadres here on Friday in memory of the departed leader and a meeting will be held on December 27 at the Gandhi Bhawan.
