Former MLA Jiban Bora passes away

TEZPUR, Feb 5 � Social worker, academician, lawyer and former MLA of Tezpur Assembly constituency, Jiban Bora passed away on Wednesday morning at a Guwahati hospital following prolonged illness. He was 87.

Also a former president of Tezpur Sahitya Sabha, Bora was a resident of Barahalia here. Born and brought up in the Jamugurihat area in Sonitpur district, Bora took his higher education in Guwahati.

Bora, who was closely associated with socialist leaders like Dr Purna Narayan Sinha, Bipin Pal Das and Golok Kakoti, represented the Tezpur LAC in Assam Assembly, contesting the elections with the Janata Party ticket in 1978.

Bora also served Darrang College as a lecturer of political science. He retired from his job in 1989 and started practising law. Also an efficient footballer during his youth, he served various organisations.
