Former Minister�s son sentenced to 5 yrs in jail

IMPHAL, Jan 20 - A court here handed down a five-year jail sentence to a former Minister�s son on Friday after he was convicted in the Irom Roger murder case after a five-year long legal battle.

Nongthombam Ajay Singh, son of former Minister N Biren Singh, who is now a State BJP leader, was convicted on January 6 by the trial court in the sensational murder case of the teenage boy.

District & Sessions Judge, Imphal West, Maibam Manojkumar Singh announced the sentence. The trial court also slapped a fine of Rs 10 lakh on Ajay Singh, which will be given to the victim�s party,� CBI advocate P Ibomcha said.

Ajay Singh was convicted under Section 304 Part II of IPC and Section 27 of Arms Act. The court remanded him to judicial custody following announcement of the judgement.

The murder case of the teenage boy was taken up by CBI after the then State Cabinet took the decision on handing over the case to the investigating agency.

Four other co-accused in the murder case were discharged by an order of the Session Court, Imphal West in 2012 for lack of sufficient evidence.

The convict shot Irom Roger to death following a road rage during Holi festival on March 20, 2011 at Ghari under Singjamei Police Station in Imphal.
