Former Manipur Minister dies

IMPHAL, March 6 � Veteran Communist leader and former Manipur Health Minister Pheiroijam Parijat Singh passed away on Friday following prolonged illness at his residence at Nongada village in Imphal East district. He was 72.

He is survived by his wife, two sons and four daughters. The former Minister has been bed-ridden since last year after a stroke. The last rites of the former Minister was held at Irawat Park, Tellou under Lamlai police station.

Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh in a statement, said, �In the untimely demise of Parijat, not only the State but the country has lost a great leader.�

He had represented the Lamlai constituency for the sixth consecutive term and held various portfolios including Power, Health and Education as a Cabinet Minister from 1972 to 2007. He joined the CPI in 1964 and became the National Executive member.
