Former DGP Khagen Sarma passes away

By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, Oct 25 - Former Director General of Assam Police Khagen Sarma passed away this evening.

The former Assam Police chief was ailing for quite some time and was shifted to Guwahati from Mumbai recently.

A 1982-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of Assam-Meghalaya cadre, Sarma led the Assam Police from January 17, 2014 to December, 2015.

Known for his deft handling of law-and-order issues, Sarma played a key role in facilitating parleys with a number of banned outfits, including ULFA.

In a career spanning nearly 33 years, Sarma was also instrumental in revamping the Special Branch, the intelligence wing of the Assam Police, which he led for over a decade. After joining as the DIG of Special Branch in 1997, he went on to serve as the DIG, IG and Additional DG of the intelligence wing before taking over as the Director General of Civil Defence and Home Guards in 2013.

During his career as an IPS officer, Sarma had served as Superintendent of Police of Karimganj, North Cachar Hills and Jorhat, besides being appointed as the Principal of the Police Training College.

He was also the DIG of Police of the Northern Range.

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has expressed grief at the death of the former Assam Police chief.
