Former Cong MLA Membar Gogoi passes away

JORHAT, Dec 17 - Former Congress MLA of Teok Assembly constituency Membar Gogoi breathed his last at his residence in Pachim Bangalpukhuri area of Jorhat in the early hours of Saturday due to prolonged illness. He was 80.

Prior to his joining Congress party in 1988 Gogoi was working as a superintending engineer in Assam State Electricity Board (ASEB).

He was elected for the State Legislative Assembly constituency for three consecutive terms since 2001 from Teok constituency. Besides being an MLA he was the chairperson of the Atate agricultural marketing board and a former president of the Tai-Ahom Sanskrity Sangraikhyan and Siksha Bikash Committee of Jorhat.

Along with the representatives of Jorhat district Congress several organisations and locals of Teok expressed sorrow in his death. Paying floral tribute to him at the office premises of Jorhat district Congress former Lok Sabha MP and the president of district Congress Dip Gogoi, Mariyani MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi and several organisations said that they lost a simple and benevolent worker of the party who worked immensely for the welfare of the people of Teok.

Our Staff Reporter adds: The Chairman in-charge, members, officers and staff of the Assam Public Service Commission have expressed their deep sorrow at the passing away of Membar Gogoi, former member of the APSC and former MLA. They conveyed their heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved family and prayed to God for eternal peace of the departed soul.

A condolence meeting held today in this connection was presided over by APSC Chairman in-charge Brig (Retd) Ranjit Borthakur.

The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee has also condoled the demise of former MLA of Teok. APCC president Ripun Bora in his condolence message said that Gogoi�s death is an irreparable loss for the Congress party and also for the people of Teok and Jorhat.

Former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi also mourned the death of Membar Gogoi. �His service towards the Congress party and to the people of Assam will always be remembered. He has also rendered selfless service to the people belonging to the backward sections of society,� Gogoi said.
