Former AKRSU members resolve to revive ST demand

By Correspondent

BONGAIGAON, Sept 13 - Prakton AKRSU Samannayrakhi Samiti, a body of former members of the students group, decided in a meeting today to revive their demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status for its community.

Other than tribal status, no other arrangement can provide constitutional safeguard to our community, the Samitis leaders felt.

Samiti president Bimal Kumar Barman, after he chaired a meeting at Greater Bongaigaon Press Club here today, addressed a press conference and said that on September 16 they would meet local legislator and Food and Civil Supply Minister Phani Bhushan Choudhury, who is also a member of the group of ministers looking after the ST issue in the state, to expedite the process.

Since the community has been reeling under several crises, hence to discuss and form the opinion on the burning issues, the Samiti has decided to organise a convention in Bongaigaon on October 11.

After proper study and observation we will present our opinion on the Kamatapur Autonomous Council (KAC), Barman said.

Besides, the Samiti adopted a resolution to observe August 14 as the Koch Rajbongshi communitys National Day every year as on this very day the founder president of the students group, i.e., Nirmal Ray, had lost his life, Barman added.
