Former AIUDF MLA Ataur Rahman Majharbhuiya excluded from NRC!

By Staff Correspondent

SILCHAR, Aug 31 - Even as there are no reports of any major upheaval across Cachar and Karimganj districts following the publication of the much-awaited supplementary list of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) amidst tight security arrangements on Saturday, name of former AIUDF legislator Ataur Rahman Majharbhuiya has missed out from the list.

The two-term MLA from Cachars Katigorah constituency and now a Congress leader was found dejected with names of himself, his son and a daughter missing from the list.

I had my name in the first list published on December 31, 2017. But I found my name to have been sriken off in the second list. Following which, notices were served against me and two of my daughters and my only son asking all of us to visit Karimganj for hearing. On August 17 this year, we got another notice and accordingly we responded wherein the officials assured that the minor issues would be sorted out and names would be enlisted in the final NRC list which was published today. I am dismayed at being excluded and feel extremely insulted, Majharbhuiya told reporters at his residence. He, however, informed that the name of one of his daughters has been included in the final NRC list published today.

With a heavy voice, the former AIUDF MLA who claims himself to be a khilonjia of the state said that out of the 19 lakh people who have been excluded, there is bleak possibility that justice would be provided to them as promised by the Government. He, however, hinted that he would follow the procedures and approach the Foreigners Tribunal with his plea for inclusion in the NRC scheme of things.

It may be mentioned that Majharbhuiya was elected as an MLA from Katigorah constituency in 2006 and had been a member of the Assembly till 2016.

Cachar DC Laya Madduri told reporters that the supplementary list has been displayed across 160 NSKs of the district and there has been no report of any chaos so far. Echoing her, Karimganj DC MS Mani Vannan also said that people are viewing their names in the published list at the 86 designated NSKs of the district amidst a peaceful environment.
