MORIGAON, April 16 - In a significant development, veteran Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) leader, president of the Morigaon district unit of the AGP and a former Minister in the Prafulla Mahanta Ministry (1996-2000), Bubul Das resigned from the party yesterday and joined the Congress in a meeting held at Nellie today in the presence of Congress leaders Rockybul Hussain and Pradyut Bordoloi.
After quitting the AGP, Das appealed to his party workers to vote against the BJP as a mark of protest against the inclusion of CAB in the BJPs manifesto. After sending the resignation letter to AGP president Atul Bora, the three-time MLA from Jagiroad constituency addressing a press conference at Morigaon Press Club alleged that the present AGP leadership took the decision of alliance with BJP without endorsement of partys general council. Das, a close associate of former Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta said in the press conference that as many as 23 local AGP committees of Morigaon district AGP will cast their votes against BJP which is a communal party. The real AGP workers will soon call a general meeting to reconstitute the party, Das added.
Meanwhile, there is every possibility of a vertical split in the AGPs Morigaon district unit as some AGP workers are seen busy in election campaign of Piyush Hazzarika, Minister for Health for State at Jagiroad in favour of BJP candidate Rupak Sarma while the majority of the workers of AGP are doing their level best for to campaign in favour of the Congress candidate Pradyut Bordoloi. One Dimbeswar Bordoloi, Executive Member of Tiwa Autonomous Council, a die hard AGP member joined the BJP while in his area at Garmari and Ghaguwa, AGP workers are campaigning for the Congress candidate.
Meanwhile, in Morigaon LAC, the members of Communist Party of India (CPI) have declared open support to Congress candidate Pradyut Bordoloi. The general meeting held on April 11 at Morigaon CPI office under the presidentship of its senior leader Abu Bakkar Siddique took the resolution to support the Congress candidate in Nagaon HPC. In a press release, veteran CPI leader and former Morigaon MLA Munin Mahanta said that to defeat the communal, capitalist BJP in Nagaon, his party will appeal to the people to vote for Congress candidate Pradyut Bordoloi.
On the other hand, the All Tiwa Students Union has also appealed to the tribal people to take a stand against the BJP as it is the originator of the anti-indigenous CAB. Hence, people should cast conscience votes, the press release added.
