By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, July 24 - The Office of the State Coordinator, National Register of Citizenship (NRC), Assam today said in a press release here today that subsequent to the July 21, 2015 order of the Supreme Court in Writ Petition (C) 562/2012, the last date for submission of forms has been extended to August 31, 2015. It, however, added that the date of final publication of the updated NRC continues to be January 1, 2016 and no further extension of this date would be possible under any circumstance.

The updated NRC shall consist names of all Indian citizens, including their children and descendants. Anyone, who may have moved to the State of Assam subsequent to March 24, 1971, would be eligible for inclusion in the NRC on adducing satisfactory proof of residence in any part of the country (outside Assam) as on March 24, 1971.

Tea tribes shall be eligible to be covered under the category of original inhabitants of Assam provided for under Clause 3(3) of The Citizenship (Registration of Citizens and Issue of National Identity Cards) Rules, 2003. Inclusion of such original inhabitants would be on the basis of proof to the satisfaction of the Registering Authority which establishes the citizenship of such persons beyond reasonable doubt.

Though the final date of publication of the updated NRC shall continue to be January 1, 2016, intermediary timelines can be altered.

Since no further extension of the date of publication of the updated NRC would be possible under any circumstances, it has advised people to ensure that they submit their application forms as soon as possible without waiting for the last date, which if inadvertently missed, would not be considered under any circumstance.

It further stated that the online submission facility has been established and online submissions can be made easily. Yesterday itself (on 23/07/15) 11,417 application forms were submitted online, it added.
