Forest cover in State decreases

NEW DELHI, July 8 � In an alarming development, unabated encroachment of forest areas in Assam has led to decrease in forest cover in the State by 2 square km, the India State of Forest Report 2013 released here today said.

The report said that out of the total forest cover of 27,671 sq km, which is 35.28 per cent of the total geographical area, Assam has lost forest cover in 2013 as compared with the figures of 2011.

The report was released by Union Minister of State for Environment and Forest Prakash Javadekar.
