GUWAHATI, May 15 - Some evil forces are desperately trying to create disturbance in Assam and police and security forces have been directed to take strong action against such forces to ensure peace in the State, said Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.
Talking to The Assam Tribune, Sonowal , who is also in charge of the Home Department, said, since the day the present Government assumed office, a conspiracy is on by certain groups to create disturbance in the State and to disturb the age old bond of unity among cross sections of people living in Assam. He said that every time, such conspiracies were defeated with the cooperation of people and asserted that no force would be successful in weakening the bond of unity among all sections of people.
The Chief Minister said that the Government is committed to maintain peace in the State and protect life and property of everyone. He said that the police and security forces have been directed to take strong action against anyone found to be involved in attempts to create disturbance in the State. He also said that all police officers down the line have been asked to maintain good relations with all sections of people. Peoples cooperation is a must to ensure peace in the society and I am confident that the Government will receive active cooperation from the people to ensure peace in the society, he added.
Replying to a question on the shortage of forces faced by the Government, Sonowal admitted that some forces were withdrawn from Assam because of elections in other parts of the country. But at the same time, he said that the Central Government has already promised to send back the Central forces withdrawn from the State immediately after the elections are over.
The Chief Minister alleged that some organizations are trying to create confusion in the minds of people on the issue of updating of the National Register of Citizens (NRC), which is going on under the supervision of the Supreme Court. The Government had already made it clear time and again that interest of all genuine Indian citizens would be protected, but despite that some people are trying to create confusion in the minds of the people, he added.
It may be mentioned here that some confusion have been created on the issue of updating the NRC and there have been instances where those who filed objections on the draft of the NRC received threats. On the other hand, some parts of the State witnessed disturbance on communal lines and the administration was forced to impose curfew in Hailakandi and stop internet services in entire Barak valley following group clashes.
