Food van carrying midday meal vandalised

By Staff Correspondent

SILCHAR, Nov 4 - Amidst the annoyance over assigning the preparation of Midday meal for students across government schools in the State to the NGOs, midday meal employees here allegedly vandalised food items prepared and brought by the concerned NGO at Srikona on Monday.

According to sources, annoyed employees including cooks and helpers staged a protest near Srikona ITI and stopped the van carrying food items prepared by the NGO meant for midday meal distribution at Tapang Block of the district. Angry workers wreaked havoc and threw the cooked food out of the containers and vandalised the carrier as well, sources added.

Soon, police rushed to the spot and sent the vehicle carrying food items back to Silchar amidst rising protests by the employees.

We are on protest since November 1 against the Government move to deprive us from our jobs and assigning the task of preparing midday meal to NGOs. By no stretch of imagination, we shall allow the Government to play with our lives by depriving us, the agitators echoed.

Police informed that there have been no arrests made in this regard. The protest was withdrawn later in the day, a senior police official added.
