NEW DELHI, July 1 - The Ministry of Food Processing (MoFP) has proposed to set up a food processing technical institute in Guwahati, Union Minister of State for Food Processing, Rameswar Teli said on Monday.

Talking to this newspaper, Teli said that he has sought 50 bighas of land in and around Guwahati to set up the institute. We held a meeting yesterday, where Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal was also present. The district authorities has identified land in Chandrapur near Guwahati, he disclosed,

The proposed institute will have a capacity to train 300 students. Only two such institutes exists in India including one in Tirunenveli in Tamil Nadu and another in Gurugram, Haryana.

Teli said he would shortly write to all the North Eastern States to set up a separate ministry of Food Processing. It is surprising that none of the North Eastern States have any food processing ministry. Only Meghalaya has a food processing department but it is not a ministry, he added.
