GUWAHATI, Nov 4 - Acclaimed filmmaker from Manipur Aribam Syam Sharma today said it is important to pay attention to meaningful storytelling in films, without making it overly melodramatic. Sharma said this while interacting with the audience during the screening of his film Nongphadok Lakpa Atithi (The Guest) here today.
The film is an in-house production of the Doordarshan and produced by Deepak Sharma. It had the world premiere in the third edition of the Guwahati International Film Festival (GIFF).
The film depicts the story of a woman named Tamubi, who was determined not to visit her estranged husband. But, one day, against her own will, she decides to visit his place to attend her daughter�s wedding, during which her husband pleads her to start life afresh. But, Tamubi sticks to her stand.
Sharma has written the screenplay and directed the music of Nongphadok Lakpa Atithi as well. It is the 15th feature film of Sharma�s career.
Emphasising that there are still audiences for realistic cinema, he said, �The audience in India always wants some dreams in cinema to forget the reality. So, commercial filmmakers of the country try to sell dreams in their films. Earlier, I also used to make commercial films and had got immense commercial success.�
The maker of numerous documentaries, Sharma expressed his satisfaction over the works done by some budding filmmakers of the Northeast. He said that a public broadcaster like the Doordarshan can provide the much-needed stage for budding filmmakers to display their talents.
The octogenarian director, known for vivid portrayal of realism in his movies that has brought him international fame, has completed 45 years in the career in filmmaking, bagging 15 national film awards to date.
�Music is the first love of my life. Later, theatre became a passion and after that I entered the world of cinema,� he revealed during the interaction.
