Flood waters receding in upper Assam

By Bureau

DIBRUGARH, Sept 7 The flood waters of the Brahmaputra and its tributaries, which were in high spate earlier this week in the upper Assam districts, are gradually beginning to recede. While the flood waters will take some time to fully flow out, large chunks of agricultural fields, low lying areas, reserve forests and national parks had reeled under floods, with individuals and the Government suffering losses.

In Dibrugarh district, the worst affected areas were under the Dibrugarh West Revenue Circle. In the Larua mouza, 48 villages were inundated, while 50 villages in the Kalakhowa and Madhupur areas were also affected by the floods. On Friday, the Brahmaputra washed away a portion of the Bogibeel ring bund. This ring bund was constructed from DoNER funds last year, and at that time, it was alleged that the construction quality was very inferior.

In Tinsukia district, the Brahmaputra and Dibru rivers had caused havoc in the Dibru Saikhowa National Park for almost a week since last Monday. Elsewhere in the district, a total of 172 villages were affected by floods. Standing crops have also been destroyed, though the loss is yet to be officially quantified.
