SILCHAR, June 14 - Flood situation of Barak Valley has remained critical as most of the rivers are flowing above the danger level.
In Cachar district, water level of Barak river at the Annapurna Gauge station in Silchar was recorded at 20.81 metre posing a threat to the people living in the area. The overall flood situation of Lakhipur has taken a serious turn today. Cachar Deputy Commissioner, Dr S Laxmanan informed that over 5,000 people have been affected as 56 villages have been completely inundated by flood waters.
�We have opened relief camps and the officials are keeping a close vigil on the developments. Instructions have been given to all the departments to remain alert in the crisis situation. A control room has been opened with emergency numbers- 1077 , 03842-239429 and 9401624141. Ferry services have been suspended for the safety of the passengers,� the Deputy Commissioner added.
Asked about the availability of relief materials, Dr Laxmanan replied that there are enough stock to cope with the situation. �We have adequate stock of food and relief materials and we are in the process of procuring more in the days to come,� he added.
A 40-year-old lady, identified as Reena Mura, has been reportedly washed away in Dolu area of Cachar on Wednesday evening.
Meanwhile, train services have been affected in this region in the wake of rising water level.
Erosion has occurred in places like Manikpur and Rajnagar under Katigorah constituency creating a major problem for the people.
According to reports, similar situation is prevailing in Karimganj district. Rising water level of Longai river poses a threat to the people of the bordering district and Patherkandi constituency.
Hailakandi Correspondent adds: The flood situation of Hailakandi district has worsened during the past 24 hours as new areas have been inundated and major breaches occurred at least four areas of the district.
According to a release issued by the District Disaster Management Authority, the first wave of flood has affected 58,208 people and a cropland of 740 hectare. 51 relief camps have been set up by the district administration in order to accommodate 23,689 inmates.
The district administration has stepped up relief operations in 102 villages under Katlicherra, Hailakandi and Lala revenue circles. Deputy Commissioner, Adil Khan asked the concerned departments to remain vigil. Moreover, the State Government officials have been camping in the affected areas for the past two days and supervising the relief and rehabilitation operations. Khan assured that the administration will extend all possible help to the affected families.
SDRF and NDRF have been deployed in the affected areas. Altogether 8 boats have been pressed into service for carrying out rescue and relief operations.
Altogether 11 roads have been submerged with several culverts washed away across the district. The water level of Katakhal and Dhaleswari rivers of Hailakandi district has been increasing rapidly. Most of the tea gardens of Hailakandi district have been affected by flash flood. The surface communication has remained disrupted.
Meanwhile, the Met department warned of heavy showers in southern Assam and in Tripura over the next 48 hours.
