Flood situation grim in Sonitpur

TEZPUR, July 17 - Following incessant rain, the floodwaters of the major tributaries of the Brahmaputra including Gabharu, Sopia, Chatrang, Solengi, Brahmajan, Dipota, Jorashar, Jiabharali and Gorjuli in Sonitpur district have inundated many areas including human habitations.

According to information available here, 10 villages under the Bahbari Mouza and 10 more under the Bihaguri Mouza have been submerged by the floodwaters of the Dipota river. A seven-metre stretch of the Bindukuri-Bahbari PWD Road has also been washed away.

Moreover, the Jorashar river has wreaked havoc in the Chariduar, Balipara and Goroimari region. The floodwaters have submerged the approach road from the NH 15 to the Saloni Airfield. According to sources, the low-lying areas of the airfield have also been inundated.

Those who have been displaced due to the flood alleged that local representatives, including panchayat workers and officials from the administration, are yet to visit the affected areas to take stock of the situation. The Belsiri, Dipota, Jorashar, Gabharu and Jiabharali rivers in Tezpur subdivision are flowing above the danger level.
