SILCHAR, June 13 - Incessant rains over the past few days have inundated vast areas of Barak Valley. The major rivers in Karimganj district, including Longai, Singla and Kushiara are overflowing and have damaged standing crops across the district, especially in Patherkandi constituency.
According to sources from the Water Resources Department, in Karimganj, Longai river was flowing above the danger level.
�Flood has taken a serious turn in Karimganj. Around 100 villages with over 50,000 people have been affected so far. MLA of Patherkandi, Krishnendu Paul has visited the affected areas. In order to provide relief to the affected people around 50 relief camps have been opened so far. With water flowing at least four-feet above the embankments, the overall situation is unprecedented across the district. We are taking all possible measures to prevent further damage,� said Karimganj Deputy Commissioner Pradip Kumar Talukdar.
In Cachar, water level of Barak river is rising. According to sources, water level at the Annapurna Gauge Station has been recorded at 19.38 metre causing a concern for the people living in the area.
Hailakandi Correspondent adds: Following a breach in the embankment at Tasla, Nimaichandpur is under a serious threat of flood.
Katakhal river has been in spate following a torrential rainfall in the catchment areas for the past couple of days.
Eight villages have been fully affected by flood waters.
The breach at the Tasla embankment has affected Nimaichandpur, Nityanandapur, Sudarshanpur and Bandukmara.
Surface communication has been snapped between Sudarshanpur Part III to Nityanandapur as the approach road of the bridge near Kalacherra has been washed away. The road has been inundated by surging waters.
Executive Engineer, PWD (Rural Roads), Hailakandi Division, RA Choudhury disclosed that a huge stretch of the NH has been submerged. �Altogether 9 PWD roads have been submerged in the district, and we are taking steps to repair them,� he said while sharing information on the gravity of the situation with this correspondent.
Officials of the district administration and heads of concerned departments are camping in the affected areas overseeing the relief operations. Additional SDRF teams have been pressed into service for rescue operations. Even Assam Rifles has been kept on standby to deal with the situation.
Two rubber boats from the SDRF have been pressed into service at Katlicherra and Lala. Four more boats from NDRF are on the way.
Deputy Commissioner, Adil Khan said the administration will leave no stone unturned in ensuring safety and security of the people and in carrying out relief and rehabilitation operations in the flood-hit areas.
Health and Family Welfare, Public Health Engineering and Social Welfare departments are working round-the-clock to provide basic amenities to the affected people. The police is providing security to the affected people living in camps as well as in the flood-hit areas.
16 relief camps have been opened up by the district administration to provide shelter to the flood-affected people. Medical teams have been despatched from district headquarters and the nearby areas to assist the people.
Kaziranga Correspondent adds: Several parts of Kaziranga and the Bokakhat sub-division are under flood waters. The surging water has inundated vast areas and paddy fields affecting 21 villages with a population of 18,000, said SDO ( civil) Bokakhat Vivek Shyam today. The flood water has submerged a portion of the National Highway 37, near Bokakhat town for which vehicular traffic was affected at Kohora for a while. However, the situation inside the Kaziranga National Park (KNP) is not alarming so far. In Kohora , several areas, including Nepali Goan, Bogorijuri and Bosagoan have been affected by flood water.
