Flood scene in Nagaon dist grim, one drowns

NAGAON, Sept 28 - Flood scene in Nagaon district has worsened due to incessant rains during the past few days and the overflowing water of Kapili river submerged more than 150 villages under Kampur and Raha revenue circles, while one village under Kaliabor Revenue Circle has been inundated by the overflowing water of the mighty Brahmaputra till the filing of this report.

This current wave of flood has claimed the life of a 15-year-old minor girl named Samia Khatun of Magurgaon village under Raha Revenue Circle on Monday morning, sources said.

As per a report of District Disaster Management Authority, Nagaon, it was stated on Monday afternoon the overflowing water of Kapili river submerged more than 90 villages under Kampur Revenue Circle and 60 villages under Raha Revenue Circle, while the overflowing water of Brahmaputra inundated one village under Kaliabor Revenue Circle and affected more than 1,98,854 people and ravaged around 7,419 hectares of cropland in the district till Monday.

During this wave, the floodwater submerged three important roads under Kampur Revenue Circle and washed away the approach portion of BR no. 8/1 on Amsoighat-Borgang Road under Raha Revenue Circle for which the traffic was being disrupted, stated the report.

Apart from this, the Kapili is flowing one metre above the danger level, while the Brahmaputra is flowing 46 centimetres below the danger level. It is, however, feared that the floodwater may inundate more villages under Kampur and Raha revenue circles in the next 12 hours, sources claimed.

The district administration has already set up two relief camps respectively at Bahakabari HS School and Bahakabari Middle English School under Raha Revenue Circle in which around 271 inmates are taking shelter currently. Besides, two units of SDRF with 80 personnel have been deployed in those flood-hit areas for carrying out rescue operations.
