Flood scene in Goalpara dist turns critical

GOALPARA, July 20 - Goalpara district is facing a critical flood situation as flash floods caused by gushing rain water from the neighbouring State of Meghalaya flowing down from the southern hilly side has inundated new areas today. It has snapped the approach point of the Habraghat bridge on the Krishani-Mornoi road under Matia circle disrupting road communication between Krishnai and Mornoi town.

According to reliable sources, flood water from the surging Krishnai river has entered these areas from the breached portions at the Moinamoti bund and the Bhojmalla bund, which is affecting many downstream villages under Manikpur Bhela khamar GP, Mornoi GP and Harimura GP.

Meanwhile in an official release it was stated that dealing with the emergency situation, the teams from NDRF and SDRF rescued 56 persons from the Kharjira Manikpur area under difficult and tiring circumstances due to heavy rainfall on the intervening night of July 19 and 20 in the presence of Deputy Commissioner Varnali Deka and other senior officials. The affected people have been shifted to relief camps opened by the district administration in the area.

According to the official flood bulletin, over 4,59 lakh people from a total of 269 villages have been affected by the deluge. Of these 19,544 persons including children have taken shelter in 90 relief camps opened across the district while a total of 90,822 (big), 44,049 (small) domesticated animals and 1,36,896 poultry and a total of 11,327.23 hectares of crop land have also been affected by the flood.
