Flood relief in lower Assam inadequate: AIUDF

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Aug 2 - The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) has alleged discrimination by the State government against flood-affected people of lower Assam.

In a statement, AIUDF supremo and Lok Sabha MP Badruddin Ajmal said that while the government has claimed that it is extending help to all flood-affected people, the reality is different.

Ajmal said that flood-affected areas of lower Assam are not getting adequate assistance and mismanagement by the government and administration is evident.

Ajmal, who has been undertaking visits to various flood-affected areas under Dhubri Lok Sabha constituency and other places for the last few days, said that the situation in those places is as bad as in Majuli or other areas of upper Assam.

However, he alleged that the government has not been providing adequate relief materials in affected areas of lower Assam, adding that there is shortage of food, baby food, fodder and medicines.

Ajmal called upon the government to look into the matter and provide succour to the flood victims.

It is noteworthy that the AIUDF had last week handed over a memorandum to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh seeking a package of Rs 10,000 crore for relief and rehabilitation of flood-affected people of Assam and also demanded that Assams flood and erosion problem be declared as a national calamity.
