Flood hits Garo Hills

TURA, June 7 - The current wave of flood has affected many parts of Garo Hills as several rivers flowing across the district have now crossed the danger level.

Overflowing water of Damring river has submerged Mendadum village causing hardship for the people. Most of the villages along the NH-51 have been affected by the current wave of flood.

Many parts of West Garo Hills have also remained cut off following damaging vital bridges. A wooden bridge in Kalchengpara market collapsed causing hardship for Sasatgre, Mangchim and Selsella.

In the Tikrikilla area, which had a major impact from the last flood, is facing a threat due to collapse of a bridge at Rangsagre. A sub-way in Chibinang�Bangalkhata was washed away by overflowing water snapping the surface communication system. Several hectares of paddy field have also been submerged.

�Our farmers are incurring a huge loss due to flood as their standing crops have been damaged,� a social activist said.

West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, Ram Singh said that an assessment was being done on the damages caused by the current wave of flood.

Meanwhile, the villagers have demanded adequate relief package for the flood victims in the areas.
