AGARTALA, June 17 - The overall flood situation in Tripura has improved significantly on Sunday with water receding in all the major rivers of the State.
But several localities still remain submerged in Kailashahar, one of the worst affected subdivisions. Altogether 32,000 flood affected people are still taking shelter in 173 relief camps � mostly in Unakoti district, according to State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC).
The river Manu, which had caused extensive damages in Kailashahar and Kumarghat subdivisions in Unakoti district, is now flowing two-metres below the danger level as there was no fresh downpour over the past 48 hours.
Reports said gushing water of river Manu has caused damage to an embankment at Govindapur of Kumarghat subdivision. The Chief Engineer of Water Resource department has rushed to the spot and TSR and NDRF personnel have already begun repair works on the embankment.
Three persons have died and seven villagers were injured in flood related incidents from June 5 to June 17 while 24 dwelling huts were completely destroyed besides leaving several acres of crops damaged, according to latest report of SEOC.
The State has witnessed two back to back waves of flood this month causing extensive damage to properties. The State Government has already sent a SOS to Centre seeking Rs 49 crore as relief package early this month but no fund has been released yet.
