Flesh trade flourishing in city pockets

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, May 9 After the detention of two girls from Anil Nagar area last night on charges of running a prostitution racket, City Police has intensified its operation against those dealing in flesh trade.

Police sources told this reporter that it has found clues about a few such rackets operating in and around the city and their activities is being tracked.

Interestingly, these rackets are operating in residential areas, especially in secured apartments located at the heart of the city, an Assam Police official said.

He went on to inform that flat-based prostitution rackets are flourishing at a brisk pace and even women belonging to well-off families are indulging in such activities to earn quick bucks.

Police department, in association with NGOs working in this field, are trying to get to the roots of the business, which eventually may unmask many so-called reputed personalities, sources claimed, adding that it has gathered inputs about the involvement of some influential persons behind the racket.

We talk about girls being trafficked to other parts of the country to be forced into sex trade but we very often tend to overlook the fact that Guwahati itself is becoming a hub for prostitution, the sources stated, adding that college students, working women and even housewives are falling prey to this menace.

Sources, however, conceded that time has come when investigation needs to give special stress in improving the conviction rate, when it comes to those involved in sex trade.

Records show that the conviction rate in such crimes is very low, which makes the culprits feel that they can get away with it easily, the sources added.
