NORTH LAKHIMPUR, June 28 - Torrential rains over the past few days have triggered flash flood in various parts of Lakhimpur district. The Singra river which is flowing above the danger mark has breached a portion of the PWD road and inundated the National Highway-15 near Nowboicha today. The flood waters have washed away a portion of the Dolahat-Phulbari road this morning causing a serious problem for the people living in the area.

Overflowing water has submerged several houses and business establishments at Dolahat Tiniali. The road communication of various parts of the district has been affected by flood water and as a result of which hundreds of vehicles remained stranded. The overflowing water of Singra has inundated many houses affecting thousands of people. The Nowboicha NRC Seva Kendra has also been submerged by flood prompting the authorities to save its documents with the help of the State Disaster Management Force. The NDRF personnel have been deployed in order to carry out rescue operations. It may be mentioned here that a portion of the NH-15, which was breached at Gendhalee during 2017, is yet to be repaired. A section of concerned citizens today appealed to the State Government to provide relief materials considering the gravity of the situation.

We want a permanent solution to the perennial flood problem, they said. Last year also flood created havoc in many parts of the district and damaged standing crops.

Meanwhile, an NDRF release claimed that a team of 12 Bn of NDRF based in Doimukh, has been carrying out rescue operations. We have evacuated 1,946 people stranded in the Dolahat area, the release said.
