BONGAIGAON, Aug 18 - After last night�s incessant rains, flood waters of Aie river and its tributaries have inundated crop and residential lands in several villages, forcing scores of people to move out for safe shelter in Bongaigaon and Chirang districts.
According to the administration, the flash floods of Aie river, a major river in the district, and its tributaries have already affected around 52,163 people of 59 villages in Bongaigaon district.
The Srijangram block and a large part of Bijni, which fall under Bongaigaon district, have witnessed a major damage as the gush of river waters in Srijangram area had breached portions of anti-erosion dams before submerging human habitations, said the affected villagers.
No casualties of livestock and human life in the flash floods have been confirmed by the administration till filing of this report. Administration would decide the setting of relief camps for the flood victims in the evening as water of flash floods is likely to recede by the evening, informed the district disaster control room. A total of 1941 people of 32 villages have been affected by the flood waters of rivers Aie, Nangolbhanga, Champa, Kanamakra, Bhur, Taklai, Bhola, Ougrong and their tributaries in Chirang district. Total 618 hectares of land, including 19.3 hectares crop land, have been affected in the floods. The final assessment of the damages caused by the floods is yet to reach the district headquarters till filing of this report.
