Five of vehicle lifting gang arrested

MANGALDAI, June 11 - In a breakthrough against the operation of inter-State vehicle lifters, police personnel from Dhula Police Station in Darrang district arrested five members of a gang who were also accused in the planned murder of one Sorhab Ali (39), a driver of a stolen vehicle on June 4 last and also managed to recover the vehicle.

The five accused in the age group of 25 to 27 years were arrested from different locations of the district under Dhula and Dalgaon Police Stations. However, another member of the gang is still absconding, said Ranjit Hazarika, Officer-in-Charge of Dhula Police Station. All the accused were produced before the court and the court remanded them to judicial custody.

According to the police, the six-member gang hired a mini truck bearing registration no. AS 25 BC 1580 from Tangni weekly market to Orang. But on their way they killed the driver Sorhab Ali with sharp weapons and threw away the body at an isolated place on the Silbori-Orang connecting road under Dalgaon Police Station and fled away with the vehicle. However, the vehicle was intercepted by the police at Orang during a routine checking. On suspicion, the police seized the vehicle and arrested one Babul Ali of Dhanshrikash village under Dalgaon police station, who was in the driver�s seat. This eventually got linked to the investigation of the Dhula police after the owner of the vehicle lodged a missing complaint followed by the recovery of the body of the driver the next day. The Dhula Police with the help of the Orang Police interrogated Babul Ali who admitted to the planned crime and the persons involved in it.
