Five-day Raas festival from Dec 15

GUWAHATI, Nov 26 - An un-missable treat of the season, the Raas festival, flavoured with two ethnic variants, is on the anvil for Guwahatians this December. A five-day event of Raas festival will be held from December 15 to 19 at the Rudrasingha Sports Complex, Supermarket here.

The seventh edition of the event, organised by Hengerabari-based BB Creations, has been named Samanway Raas.

Sampurna Raas, or the full-length play by artistes of the Deuri community in their language and the Raas by artistes belonging to the tea community from Dergaon will be an added attraction of the festival.

This apart, popular artistes of Assamese film and television worlds will enact Srikrishnar Sampurna Raasleela on December 16 and December 19. Popular artistes like Chetana Das, Barasharani Bishaya, Aimi Barua and several television artistes will perform in the event.

Woman artistes from Khumtai will present a full-length Raas on December 18.

The main play, written by Jiten Sarma, has been translated into Deuri and tea communities� colloquial languages by Pohar Singh Deuri, Rameswar Bhuyan and Dhaniram Kurmi. Earlier also, the play had been translated into Bodo, Karbi and Mising languages and presented on the stage of Samanway Raas.

Last year, the same play was staged at Majuli, where nearly 40,000 people enjoyed the Raas presented by artistes of BB Creations.

The initiative of translating the Raas into other ethnic languages was started by Basanta Kumar Barua in 2009, which was subsequently supported by the State Directorate of Cultural Affairs and Directorate of Information and Public Relations.
