Five-day CID custody for Sanjit Krishna

GUWAHATI, Oct 16 - Senior Assam Police official Kumar Sanjit Krishna, who was arrested on Thursday evening by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in connection with the SI recruitment scam, was today produced before the Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Kamrup (Metro) which remanded him to five-day CID custody. Prior to his arrest, Krishna, who was posted as the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Karimganj, was transferred as the SP, Foreigners Regional Registration Office, Barpeta. It has been alleged that Krishna, in his capacity as the SP of Karimganj, had leaked the question paper of the SI examination against payment of hefty sum of money.

Although investigators conducted multiple searches in the house of Krishna, it, however, could not recover any amount of unaccounted money so far from his possession. Two other accused in the case, Rubul Hazarika and Saruj Sarma, believed to be key collaborators in the entire exercise, were also sent to five-day custody of the CID today.

The Court, while rejecting the bail petition of Krishna, Hazarika and Sarma, however, directed the police department to ensure medical checkup of the former Karimganj SP every 24 hours.

Meanwhile, in another significant development, another prime accused in the case and former Deputy Inspector General of Assam Police PK Dutta, today gave confessional statements before the Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Kamrup (Metro). His confessional statement was recorded under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC).

Sources said that the investigators are scouting for further details to trace the money trail in the scam.

�The revelations made by all the arrested accused are being corroborated and special stress have been put on gathering electronic evidences,� sources said, adding that both Krishna and Rubul Hazarika would be jointly questioned by the CID.

Police today arrested another accused in the SI recruitment scam Debraj Das of Barpeta and he is being brought to Guwahati. It was from the house of Das that police had recently recovered nearly Rs 2 crore.

Further, police today recovered Rs 46,77,000 in cash and gold ornaments weighing around 920 gm from a locker of Bank of Baroda in Barpeta.

Assam Police has so far arrested nearly 50 persons in connection with the scam.
