SUALKUCHI, April 18 Nearly 200 kilograms of different varieties of fishes were found dead in Bishnu Pushkar at the foothill of the temple of Hayagriv Madhab at Hajo today. Some people saw some fishes floating on the water of the historic pond in the morning. Soon a large crowd gathered around
the tank.
The cause of death of such a huge number of fishes was later ascertained by Fishery Department. According to Kameswar Kalita, Deputy Director, Fishery, depletion of oxygen could have caused the death of the fishes. He said the fishes could not make their food through photosynthetic process due to cloudy weather for the last two consecutive days. Moreover, the volume of oxygen in the tank was not sufficient for a large varieties of fishes and tortoises, he added.
Kalita said that they have conducted a pH test of the pond water and sprinkled 50 kgs of limestone in the water.
Meanwhile, the local people expressed serious concern over the indifferent attitude of the Madhab Mandir Parichalana Samiti. They alleged that the managing committee did not take any measure for maintenance of the pond.
Local people were moved by the death of the fishes in the tank which is revered by the devotees.
