First phase of panchayat poll today

By City Correspondent

GUWAHATI, Dec 4 - Altogether 229 out of the total 256 polling stations in Kamrup (Metro) district for the panchayat election have been identified as sensitive by the police administration.

Commissioner of Police Pradip Chandra Saloi while talking to The Assam Tribune today said, In Kamrup (Metro) only 27 polling stations are normal and all others are recognised as sensitive. The number of sensitive polling stations is very high in the district because the panchayat poll will be held only in areas located on the outskirts of Guwahati city. Moreover, since many centres are located in the Assam-Meghalaya border area, the challenge for conducting a peaceful poll is high.

Saloi said adequate numbers of Assam Police personnel have been deployed at every polling station. Additional forces will also be available at every police station.

In the district election will be held for six posts of zila parishad members, 21 posts of anchalik panchayat members, 21 posts of gaon panchayat presidents and 210 posts of gaon panchayat members.
