First Assamese Sahitya Akademi Award winner remembered

SIVASAGAR, July 6 - The Rongpur Sahitya Sabha on Thursday observed the 54th death anniversary of �Bonphular Kobi� Jatindranath Duwora at the poet�s residence at Bonphul Nagar here.

A large number of people attended the commemorative meeting.

Sunila Duwora, a family member of the poet, lit the ceremonial lamp.

Dr Asna Chetia, former vice principal of Sivasagar Commerce College, inaugurated the meeting and said the first Sahitya Akademi Award winner from the State was a representative of the Assamese modern poetry.

Speaking as an appointed speaker, Dr Mayashree Goswami of Sibsagar College threw light on the influence of Umar Khayam, Ivan Turgenev and Heine on Duwora�s poems.

Noted writer Diplai Bhattacharjya Boruah, in her speech, said Duwora�s lyrics were given musical notations by Lakhiram Baruah of Sonari.

Manoj Borthakur, president, Rongpur Sahitya Sabha, presided over the meeting and said Duwora�s poems were free of complexities of ideas and images.

The meeting was also addressed by Syeed Hakihur Rahman, former principal, Sivasagar Govt HS School, Uzzal Thakur, secretary, Rongpur Sahitya Sabha, Sontosh Dutta, Rhishikesg Gogoi and Putul Dihingia Baruah, among others.

Srimonta Duwora, an entrepreneur, was also felicitated in the meeting.
