Fire at Baghjan gas well finally doused

DOOMDOOMA, Nov 15 - After 172 days, Oil India Limited (OIL) finally capped the blowout gas well at Baghjan located under Doomdooma Revenue Circle of Tinsukia district, putting an end to a complicated operation.

OIL spokesperson Tridiv Hazarika informed media persons that the blowout well has been killed with brine solution and the situation is now under control. �Fire has been doused completely. There is no pressure in the well now and the situation will be observed for the next 24 hours, especially to check if there is any amount of gas migration and pressure build-up,� Hazarika said, adding, further operation to abandon the well is in progress.

�Senior OIL officials including Director (Exploration and Development) Dr P Chandrasekharan, Director (Operations) PK Goswami and Resident Chief Executive Dilip Kumar Das visited the Baghjan well site and had detailed discussion with the experts from M/s Alert and OIL,� Hazarika added.

The experts became successful in killing the well in almost 12 days after the 60 tonnes of snubbing unit flown in from Calgary in Canada by the world�s largest cargo aircraft � Antonov An-24 � reached the blowout site on November 4.

Meanwhile, the local people expressed satisfaction over the successful killing of the well.

Talking to this correspondent, Hemanta Moran, Baghjan Gaon Milanjyoti Yuva Sangha�s advisor, said, �The blowout sound has disappeared totally and there has been no fire since noon today. We have suffered a lot and hope this time, the operation is full and final.�

It can be mentioned here that the well had been spewing gas since May 27 and subsequently it caught fire on June 9.
