JORHAT, Aug 3 - BJPs Khumtai (in Golaghat district) MLA Mrinal Saikia today lodged an FIR against the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Limited (NEEPCO) at the Golaghat Police Station for reportedly releasing excess water by the PSU a few days back, which led to a sudden rise of water level in the Dhansiri and Doyang rivers.

The action reportedly resulted in causing flood in the adjoining riverside areas leading to submerging of over 90 villages and affecting a population of over 54,000 and damaging vast areas of paddy fields and houses.

Based on the FIR, a case has been registered at the Golaghat Police Station bearing No. 578/18 under Sections 120 B (Criminal conspiracy), 304 A (Causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code read with Sections 3 and 4 of the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, 1984, which deals with mischief causing damage to public property and mischief causing damage to public property by fire or explosive substance respectively.

A senior police official said that a deputy superintendent of police has been assigned to investigate the case.

The official said that statements of the concerned persons required during the probe will be taken and police will proceed thereafter accordingly.
