Final rites of hoolock gibbon performed

DIGBOI, Jan 20 - The final rites (shraddha) of the semi-domesticated hoolock gibbon, killed on January 14, was performed in the household of Bhupeswar Ningda in Ningthong (No. 2 Dibong) village under Margherita subdivision in the morning hours on Wednesday as per Buddhist religious practices.

Bhikkhu Warnachara Mahathera, the venerable Bhante of Dibong Monastery performed the rite. The rite that began with Panna and initiation of Sila was followed by the observation Panchasila and Astangika Marga (the eight-fold path under three categories.

Lastly, a prayer was conducted to elevate the deceased primate through a series of births for final nirvana. It was followed by Chibar Daan.

A source informed that the carcass of the primate will be preserved in a laboratory for future research and study.
