JORHAT, Sept 28 - Members of Students� Federation of India (SFI), Jorhat district unit, on Friday took out a procession here and later staged a protest in front of the Jorhat Deputy Commissioner�s office demanding immediately filling up of vacant posts of teachers and non-teaching staff in schools and also carry out reforms in the existing semester system in colleges.
The protesters submitted a memorandum to the Jorhat Deputy Commissioner through an executive magistrate in this regard.
The memorandum stated that as per information collected by filing RTI application, altogether there were 68 posts of teachers and non-teaching employees lying vacant in three prominent schools of Jorhat. The memorandum mentioned that there were 56 teachers and 22 non-teaching posts lying vacant in the three schools.
The schools are: Jorhat Boys� Government Higher Secondary and Multi Purpose School, Jorhat Girls� Government Higher Secondary and Multi Purpose School and Sankardev Seminary.
The memorandum further sought appointment of a permanent principal in the Jorhat Boys� Government Higher Secondary and Multi Purpose School as the said post was lying vacant since 2017 with an In-Charge Principal officiating.
The students� body called for the intervention of the Jorhat MP and the MLA on the matter.
The memorandum also demanded that the existing semester system in colleges should be reviewed by the Education department as a large number of students were getting �back� (fail) in different subjects.
Though the system is a semester-based one, a student can reappear for the back papers only after a year, the memorandum pointed out.
The memorandum further stated that the newly-introduced Choice Based Credit System in college examinations will be beneficial for students only when the University Grants Commission-recommended norm of having student-teacher ratio of 25:1 was followed upon. SFI also demanded provincialization of the science section of Jorhat Kendriya Mahavidyalay.
