GUWAHATI, Dec 7 � A combined team of FIFA and AIFF today visited the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium, Sarusajai here to take stock of the facilities available here.
The city stadium has been spotted as a probable venue for the 2017 U-17 World Cup and the FIFA and AIFF officials are making frequent visit to the stadium for inspecting the infrastructure available here.
Representatives of FIFA Vijay Parthasarathi, Constantin Weiland, Shaji Prabhakaran along with AIFF officials Javier Cheppi, Joy Bhattacharjya, Roma Khanna accompanied by Assam Football Association (AFA) secretary Ankur Dutta visited the stadium and inspected all the facilities.
Later talking to the media persons Javier Cheppi expressed satisfaction over the facilities of the stadium and was hopeful that the city stadium may be spotted as one of the eight venues for the 2017 U-17 World Cup.
However, he revealed that lots of renovation works have to be completed for the major football event. He said that the drainage system of the stadium has to be modernised. Javier said along with the main ground the practice ground of the Sarusajai stadium needs vast improvement as both the grounds are important for hosting such a big event.
He also praised the State football body and the State Government for working hard to give a fine shape to the stadium. He said, if Assam gets the U-17 World Cup matches it will be one of the frontline venues. Javier said there is still sufficient time to complete the remaining works and hoped all the works will be completed before the final inspection.
The team also visited the Judges� Field, NF Railway Stadium, IIT ground during their stay in the city.
