DIBRUGARH, Oct 6 - With only a day left for the Durga Puja celebrations to begin, a festive fever has gripped Dibrugarh.

Traffic on the roads and the crowd in market areas have increased manifold.

Despite tormenting heat, thousands continued to throng the markets for last-minute puja shopping. One can hardly walk at ease on the streets and footpaths of the city, given the increase in the number of pedestrians.

Braving the scorching heat, the puja committees are working on war-footing to complete the preparations. Some puja committees are also looking into the possibility of setting up eateries, recreational amenities for children and other kiosks.

More than a hundred puja mandaps are being erected in the city and its surroundings. A total of ninety two puja mandaps are being set up within the municipality area, according to the police. Some of the biggest crowd pullers are those of the Jhalukpara Durga Puja Sammittee, Shri Marwari Durga Puja Sammittee, Graham Bazars Mitra Sangha Puja Committee, Jyotinagar Sarbajanik Shree Durga Puja Samittee and Graham Bazar Municipality Durga Puja.

Devotees and puja revellers will experience thematic and art based puja mandaps. The Jhalukpara Durga Puja Sammittee has adopted the Rajasthani culture as its theme, while the theme picked by Jyotinagar Sarbajanik Shree Durga Puja Samittee is Go Green. The Shri Marwari Durga Puja Sammittee has given emphasis on manual art and embroidery using yarn of cotton and nylon.

Likewise, the Graham Bazars Mitra Sangha Puja Committee is highlighting biodiversity.

The marquee of the puja mandap of Jhalukpara Durga Puja Sammittee depicts a Rajasthani Haveli with props, domes, well, bullock-carts etc., -- all designed by artisans from Kolkata. A troupe will also showcase Rajasthani culture like Kalbelia dance, puppet dance, fire dance etc. Musical programmes with nagara and dhol will be organized on Astami, Navami and Dashami, said Krishna Bharatia, secretary, Jhalukpara Durga Puja Sammittee.

The puja pandal of the Jyotinagar Sarbajanik Shree Durga Puja Samittee is completely green. Lights used for the illumination are also green. The use of plastic has been totally banned within the precincts of the pandal. We are laying stress on cleanliness and a healthy environment, said Jai Prakash Beriwal, secretary of the puja committee. Similarly, almost all puja committees in the city have gone for unique themes while making their puja marquees.

However, despite the craze for glamour and extravagant embellishments, puja celebrations of Milannagar Sarbajannin Durga Utsav Sammittee and Amollapatty Natya Mandir Durga Puja Sammittee have been strictly restricted only to devotion and worship. Our aim is to provide devotees a perfect ambience for worship and obeisance to Goddess Durga, said Tarun Chandra Pujari, president, Milannagar Sarbajannin Durga Utsav Sammittee.

The Amollapatty Natya Mandir Durga Puja Sammittees puja is the oldest in the city, which started some 142 years ago. The one celebrated at India Club is also one of the oldest. Milannagar Sarbajannin Durga Utsav Sammittee, which first started its puja celebrations in 1966, are celebrating its golden jubilee this year.

The traffic police have chalked out plans to ensure smooth traffic movement. From October 8 to 2 AM on October 12, no-entry has been declared from Amollapatty intersection to Marwaripatty, Convoy Road intersection to Gabharupathar, Thana Chariali to Phool Bagan and Graham Bazar police point to Phool Bagan. The NH 37 in Marwaripatty, HS Road, Jhalukpara Road, New Market Area and Mancotta Road have been demarcated as no parking area. The Seujpur Path, PN Road and AT Road Amollapatty to Graham Bazar have been declared one way during the puja days. For the parking of light motor vehicles, areas have been allotted along the RKB Path upto railway station and on the southern side of AT Road in Marwaripatty area.
