Fencer Kavita gets financial help

GUWAHATI, Sept 6 � Th Kavita Devi, who has been selected to represent the Indian fencing team in the forthcoming Asian Games, was presented Rs 1,70,000 today.

Ministers Gautam Roy and Ajit Singh along with Silchar District Sports Association gave the purse to Kavita for preparing herself for the Incheon Asian Games, South Korea from September 19 to October 4.

Durgadas Boro, president of the Fencing Association of India informed that Kavita was selected for the Asaid from the last national championship held in Jammu and Kashmir.

A 24-member Indian fencing team will participate in Incheon but they will not be patronised by the Indian Government. So all the fencers have to meet the expenditure of their own, informed the president.

Silchar DSA secretary Babul Hore informed that, as Kavita is from Silchar, their Ministers Roy and Singh decided to fund her with Rs 1 lakh and Rs 50,000 respectively. The DSA also provided Rs 20,000 to the fencer. The entire amount was handed over to Kavita in a function here today. Jayanta Talukdar (archery), Shiva Thapa (boxing), Rekha Gogoi (taekwondo), Rajani Devi (wushu) are the other State sportspersons selected for the Asian Games.
