Female voter turnout higher in 18 out of 47 LACs that went to polls

GUWAHATI, April 16 - The turnout of female voters was higher than that of their male counterpart in as many as 18 out of the total 47 Legislative Assembly Constituency (LAC) segments in the five Lok Sabha seats of Assam which went to the polls in the first phase.

Of the five Lok Sabha constituencies where voting took place in the first round, Jorhat and Kaliabor seats comprise of 10 LACs each, while Tezpur, Dibrugarh and Lakhimpur have nine LACs each.

Of the nine LAC segments comprising Tezpur parliamentary constituency, six reported a higher turnout of female voters and two witnessed better participation of the male voters on polling day, while in one segment the turnout rate of male and female electorate was exactly the same, percentage-wise.

In Tezpur Lok Sabha constituency, the turnout of female voters was higher in Dhekiajuli, Barchala, Sootea, Biswanath, Behali and Gohpur LAC segments as compared to male voters, while in Rangapara segment, the polling percentage among the male and female electorate was equal.

Of the 10 LAC segments in the Kaliabor Lok Sabha area, three reported a higher voter turnout among the female electorate as compared to their male counterparts. They are Batadroba, Sarupathar and Golaghat LACs.

There are 10 LAC segments under the Jorhat parliamentary constituency and five of those � Titabor, Mariani, Nazira, Sonari and Thowra � registered higher female voter turnout compared to the polling percentage registered for the male electorate.

The Lakhimpur Lok Sabha constituency comprises of nine LAC segments. Voter turnout among the females was higher than among males in four of the segments � Dhakuakhana, Dhemaji, Doomdooma and Sadiya.

However, in all the nine LAC segments falling under the Dibrugarh Lok Sabha constituency, the turnout of female voters was lower compared to male voters.

Overall, taking into account the entire constituency area, the turnout of female electorate was higher than males in the Tezpur Lok Sabha seat. Of the total electorate in the constituency, 80.02 per cent of the females exercised their franchise, while the turnout of male voters in Tezpur stood at 78.30 per cent.

In the other four parliamentary constituencies under Phase One, the total voter turnout was higher among the male electorate as compared to the females.

The overall voter turnout in the Tezpur Lok Sabha seat stood at 79.14 per cent. Of the nine LAC segments comprising the constituency, Biswanath reported the highest turnout of 82.63 per cent, followed by Rangapara (82.13 per cent), Behali (81.95 per cent), Gohpur (79.51 per cent), Barchala (79.22 per cent), Tezpur (78.55 per cent), Dhekiajuli (78.12 per cent), Sootea (77.07 per cent) and Bihpuria (74 per cent).

Kaliabor Lok Sabha constituency reported an overall turnout of 82.09 per cent. Of the 10 LAC segments comprising the constituency, the highest polling of 91.52 per cent was reported at Dhing, followed by Rupahihat (90.57 per cent), Samaguri (86.34 per cent), Kaliabor (84.89 per cent), Batadroba (84.21 per cent), Bokakhat (78.26 per cent), Sarupathar (76.93 per cent), Khumtai (76.91 per cent), Golaghat (76.36 per cent) and Dergaon (73.53 per cent).

The final turnout in the Jorhat Lok Sabha seat stood at 77.49 per cent. Of the 10 LAC segments in the constituency, the maximum polling of 81.01 per cent took place at Sonari, followed by Thowra (80.95 per cent), Nazira (79.91 per cent), Mahmara (79.50 per cent), Mariani (78.56 per cent), Sivasagar (78.20 per cent), Amguri (76.49 per cent), Titabor (76.28 per cent), Teok (73.12 per cent) and Jorhat (72.34 per cent).

Overall polling was 77.26 per cent in the Dibrugarh Lok Sabha seat. Among the nine LAC segments comprising the constituency, the turnout was highest at Lahowal with 79.86 per cent polling, followed by Margherita (79.41 per cent), Tingkhong (77.29 per cent), Digboi (77.21 per cent), Dibrugarh (76.81 per cent), Moran (76.30 per cent), Duliajan (76.17 per cent), Tinsukia (75.95 per cent) and Naharkatia (75.82 per cent).

The overall voter turnout in the Lakhimpur parliamentary seat stood at 75.05 per cent. Of the nine LAC segments comprising the constituency, Naoboisa reported the highest turnout of 84.29 per cent, followed by Chabua (77.65 per cent), Doomdooma (77.53 per cent), Jonai (75.80 per cent), Lakhimpur (74.48 per cent), Dhakuakhana (72.04 per cent), Majuli (71.96 per cent), Sadiya (71.49 per cent) and Dhemaji (70.16 per cent) respectively.
