Federer cruises into Rd 3 of French Open

By The Assam Tribune

PARIS, May 25 (AFP): Roger Federer won 13 games in succession as the 16-time Grand Slam title-winner easily disposed off French wild card Maxime Teixeira 6-3 6-0 6-2 to reach the Roland Garros last 32 today.

Federer, the 2009 champion in Paris, will take on Serbian 29th seed Janko Tipsarevic, who beat Spains Pere Riba, for a place in the last 16.

The Swiss great overcame an early break before breezing through in just 84 minutes leaving Teixeira, playing in his first Grand Slam event and first tour-level tournament, looked every inch the world 181.

He fought really hard and was trying his best, said Federer.

It was a good match. Im happy with the way I played. I feel like I am in the tournament now.

Next up is Tipsarevic, the colourful Serb who stretched Federer to five sets in the 2008 Australian Open third round.

Hes a dangerous player, especially on the big courts against the big players, said Federer.

Federer never needed to reach top gear today and was always in control from the time he broke to lead 5-3 in the first set. Three breaks of serve followed in the second set in which the 22-year-old Frenchman won just eight points.

Federer had swept 13 games in a row before Teixeira stopped the rot at 1-4 in the third set and the underdog even saved a match point in the seventh game.

But the world number three wrapped up victory on a sweltering Court Suzanne Lenglen when Teixeira went wide with a backhand.

In the womens event, world number one Caroline Wozniacki took her place in the French Open third round by edging Canadian qualifier Aleksandra Wozniak 6-3 7-6 (8/6) in an entertaining encounter today.

The 20-year-old Dane, who reached the Roland Garros quarter-finals last year but is yet to win a Grand Slam, will face either Slovakian 28th seed Daniela Hantuchova or Italys Sara Errani in the last 32.

After an early exchange of breaks of serve on Court Philippe Chatrier, Wozniacki broke for a 3-1 lead when a back-tracking Wozniak dug a forehand into the net from just inside the baseline.

A well-contested opening set featuring plenty of long rallies witnessed another break apiece before the Dane closed out the set, saving a break point at 5-3 up and then watching as a looping forehand from Wozniak landed long.

Wozniak, the world number 162, saved three breaks points in a closely fought second set and came close to bringing up a set point at 6-5 up, only for a backhand winner to be called narrowly out.

Wozniacki emitted a scream after netting a simple smash to put Wozniak 4-2 up in the tie-break and then drew jeers from the crowd by disputing a line call after a lob was called long, which handed her opponent three set points.

The interruption galvanised the top seed, however, and she battled back to 6-6, before claiming the match on her first match point with a running backhand that Wozniak could only volley into the net.
