FCI move to resolve contractors stir

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Aug 20 The Food Corporation of India, NE region would sit for a meeting with the FCI contractors continuing with the indefinite strike over the issue of delayed and abrupt implementation of a Supreme Court order (2007) that limited the carriage capacity of vehicle to 9 metric tonnes from 22 metric tonnes.

A letter issued to the Contractor Federation of FCI (North East Zone) by BC Parida, Assistant General Manager (S&C), FCI invited the representatives of the federation for a meeting on August 22 at the FCI zonal office to resolve the issue.

The contractors had stopped the supply of essential items to various parts of the region as a part of the protest since August 16.

Sources in the FCI informed that the authority has been taking necessary steps to ensure the supply of essential commodities is not affected and it even requisitioned vehicles after the contractors resorted to strike.

We are keen to resolve the issue and the meeting was called to facilitate the same, the sources pointed out.

It needs mention here that the Contractor Federation of FCI resorted to strike after the FCI zonal office issued instruction limiting the carriage capacity of a vehicle to 9 metric tones citing a Supreme Court order that dated back to 2007.

The contractors reasoned that as the rates were given on the basis of the ground situation that existed then, the contractors cannot be compelled to operate at the same cost when the carriage capacity has been limited.

Meanwhile, president of the federation, while confirming the development, said that he would take up all the issues with the FCI authority during the meeting.
