By Correspondent

KALAIGAON, Sept 5 - A fathers pain-staking efforts finally led to the arrest of his sons murderers, nearly a year after the gruesome incident. The recent arrest of three school-going students in the year-old death of their colleague has created shock waves in Udalguri district.

Sidon Basumatari (14), son of Bapan Basumatari of Khoirabari, a meritorious student of Diamond English School, Harisinga in Udalguri district was found dead, hanging with a gamusa from the window of his school hostel on November 8, 2016. The school authority lodged an FIR at Harisinga Police Station describing it as a case of suicide. The police also accordingly closed the case. But Bapan Basumatari, father of Sidon was not convinced. He alleged that his son was killed by his own school mates.

The theory of suicide being propogated by the school authority is fictional, he told people last year. He also filed a counter-FIR at the Harisinga Police Station last year. He also engaged informers to collect information from a few suspected students of the same school. Finally, his attempts bore fruit when an informer recorded the confession of three students who had killed his son brutally on the night of November 8 at the school hostel.

According to information, Sidon Basumatari was a brilliant and honest student in the school. He used to report the misdeeds of a few students to teachers. He also used to advise a few notorious students to study well and learn manners from him. This annoyed many. According to the confession, Allen Daimari took leave from school two days prior to the incident. He arrived at the school secretly on November 7 night and along with other two students namely Diljit Daimari and Nitu Sonowal brutally killed Sidon in his room. Later, they hung up the body so that it looked like a case of suicide.

The role of the principal of Diamond English School, Harisinga has been suspicious from the beginning, alleged Bapan Basumatari. The principal was changing his version from time to time, may be to save the prestige of his school, he told the media. Finally, on the intervension of the ADGP, Assam and other high-ranking officials, Assam Police officially arrested Allen Daimari and Diljit Daimari on September 1.

The other accused Nitu Sonowal too was arrested on September 3 from Dibrugarh. All of them have been remanded to judicial custody at Udalguri. But they have been granted interim bail by court under juvenile justice laws.
