DERGAON, Nov 20 - Assam Agricultural University (AAU) Vice Chancellor,
Dr Ashok Bhattacharyya has appealed to the farmers to adopt modern techniques to boost output.
Participating in a farmers� meet at Buralikson Sugarcane Research Station (BSRS) in Golaghat district on Tuesday, he said that the State�s economy completely depends on agriculture, and, therefore the farmers should focus on agriculture. �As agriculture is the backbone of the State economy, farmers must adopt scientific farming in order to double their income,� he reiterated.
In this context, he observed that BSRS has been playing a pivotal role in encouraging sugarcane production in the area.
Participating as the chief guest, Khumtai MLA, Mrinal Saikia urged the AAU and Agriculture department to attract youths for sugarcane cultivation. He also said the gap between the farmers and the department should be narrowed down and work should be done to motivate the youths towards agriculture.
Golaghat Deputy Commissioner and the Dean of AAU also attended the programme as invited and distinguished guests respectively.
Progressive farmers, including Lachit Bora, Chandrakanta Das, Pulin Phukan and Madhav Chandra Bora were felicitated for their outstanding contributions in the field of agriculture in the programme.
Later, MLA Mrinal Saikia inaugurated an agricultural exhibition on the occasion.
An interactive session was also organized, which saw participation of farmers, agricultural scientists and senior citizens.
Earlier, the programme started with flag hoisting by the chief scientist of the station, Dr Bigyan Chandra Bordoloi, followed by smriti tarpan by Dr Dhiman Dev Sinha.
At present the sugarcane production in Assam is at about 30,000 hectare, while the figure is 2,000 hectares in Golaghat district alone. The BSRS is producing sugarcane at 10 hectares.
