Farmers to get seeds very soon: Atul Bora

BARPETA, April 21 - The Agriculture department of the State is fully prepared to assist the farmers in view of the current pandemic COVID-19. This was disclosed by the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, Atul Bora here on Monday afternoon.

Bora who was here to assess the situation due to the ongoing lockdown informed that there is no proof that the coronavirus is transported through vegetables. However, he suggested that vegetables be consumed after being washed in hot water. He suggested that the period of lockdown may be extended in case the infection rate increases.

The minister stated that his department has chalked out a specific action plan to keep the agro- based economy of the State healthy and as part of the plan, seeds will be supplied to the farmers very soon. He requested the cultivators to work in their farmlands keeping in mind the principle of social distance. He also assured of regular and uninterrupted supply of fodder with a strict warning to hoarders and black marketers.

Referring to the Pradhan Mantri Krishak Kalyan Nidhi, Bora informed that 27 lakh farmers of the State will be provided an amount of Rs six lakh under this scheme and the first instalment of Rs 2,000 will be disbursed soon. Besides, Rs 5,000 will be given to each farmer under the Chief Minister�s agri-equipment scheme. He stated that the Finance department has released Rs 150 crore to help the farmers.

Earlier, the minister attended a review meeting here in presence of several MLAs and officers. He informed that 1.40 lakh farmers of the district will be given crop seeds free of cost. He urged all concerned to work with dedication during these tough times so that the base of the economy is not destroyed. He instructed the Deputy Commissioner to look into the problems of the farmers and make adequate arrangements for sale of vegetables, fish and meat.
