Farmers stir today over crop failure

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, June 20 - Demanding adequate compensation and remedial measures for the farmers facing crop failure this time due to the use of hybrid paddy seeds, the Assam State Kisan Sabha would organise a sit-in demonstration tomorrow at Dighalipukhuripar.

The organisation alleged that the farmers used Advanta 837 hybrid seeds, expecting higher yields; but due to the failure of the government to control seed syndicates, spurious seeds and fertilisers, the farmers are now completely left in the lurch.

Farmers of Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Nalbari, Darrang, Sonitpur and some other districts of the State are facing this difficult situation right now. Most of them have taken loans from banks and local moneylenders and are unable to repay due to crop failure, the organisation stated.

At least Rs 20,000 is spent per five bigha land for paddy cultivation which includes use of land, seeds, fertilisers, labour, et al. Further, per kg of the Advanta 837 costs as much as Rs 350 per kg, it added.

The organisation is demanding a thorough probe into the matter and adequate compensation to the affected farmers.
