TEZPUR, July 28 Some cultivators of Sonitpur district have felt cheated after cultivating the seeds provided by the Agriculture department. The supposedly high quality of hybrid paddy seeds provided by the Agriculture department has allegedly yielded only 10 per cent grain and 90 per cent chaff.

The department distributed hybrid paddy seeds of high yield, JKRH-401 which was procured from JK Argi-Genetics Limited, Hyderabad. Two cultivators of Borguri, Kurukani under Tezpur subdivision, Abdul Gani and Saidul Islam cultivated these hybrid seeds in paddy fields of three bighas each. Both the cultivators alleged that after harvesting of the crops they found only 10 per cent grains and remaining chaff. They further alleged that the taste of the grains produced was bitter. The department did not provide any fertilizer, insecticide and no officials visited the site, they alleged adding that the department distributed these seeds to the farmers mentioning that per bigha production will be 2080 kg. However, the District Agriculture Officer expressed his ignorance of the 10 per cent yield of grains from seeds.
