By RAMEN KALITA

NALBARI, Aug 14 - While the BJP Government is giving the slogan of Sab ka saath sab ka vikas for the equal development of all areas, a family in Nalbari district was compelled to spend 17 days on an empty stomach just before the Nalbari district administration provided relief materials to it recently.

The Circle Officer, Jinti Deka of Ghograpar Revenue Circle on behalf of the Nalbari district administration visited the family at Amara village of the district and provided relief materials initially for 15 days. It may be mentioned that the government schemes initiated for the poor people of the society have miserably failed to cover the family which forced all its four members to spend those days in starvation. The tragic story of the family reflects the real state of development.

The four-member family of Biren Chakravarty lives at Amara village under Ghograpar revenue circle in Nalbari district. The village is only 20 km away from Nalbari town. A casual worker of a Guwahati-based private company, Chakravarty was paralysed two years back following a cardiac stroke. Since then, the only earning member of the family has been spending time on the sick bed. His wife Kamala Chakravarty has also been diagnosed with brain tumour. She has also no other alternative but to stay in bed without any treatment as the family has no income. The problems of the family did not end here.Their only son, Brajen Chakravarty is also suffering from an acute illness for the last nine years. Despite his illness, Brajen passed his HSLC examination this year with distinction. The little help by the relatives and neighbours gave the poor and ill-fated family a means to live. When Brajen passed the HSLC examination, the MLA of Nalbari LAC Ashok Sarma extended a cash amount of Rs 5,000 from his pocket to facilitate his higher studies. Nabanita, the daughter of Biren Chakravarty is studying in the 6th semester at Nalbari College. She has now left her studies as she cant attend the classes leaving her parents without nursing. The whole family is now in a miserable condition. According to Nabanita, the family is living only on the kindness of the relatives and the neighbourers. She has called upon the government to extend a helping hand so that they can survive with honour till death. The District Development Commissioner Nadira Jesmine while talking to this correspondent said that the district administration has initially provided relief materials to the family for a fortnight and it will extend the relief if necessary.
